Northcroft Lane Link Resurfaced

Northcroft LaneAs reported previously, Spokes has given West Berkshire Council a list of priorities for improving local cycling infrastructure. As you would expect, this included several big schemes like constructing a cycle route on the A4 between Lower Way and Turnpike Road.

However, it also included a number of smaller schemes like resurfacing the western end of Northcroft Lane, which links to the cycle track at the side of Goldwell Park. This may not seem important, but this short stretch of road was so riddled with potholes that it had become quite uncomfortable to cycle on, and we are delighted to report that the Council has just resurfaced this section.

This is just one example of small-scale changes that can be implemented quickly and easily and which make a genuine difference to local cycling journeys. If you have any schemes that you would like us to lobby the Council to implement, then please get in touch. We can either raise it through the Cycle Forum or separately with Council officers.

Recreational Routes

People often ask us for ideas about where to go for recreational cycle rides. We are lucky enough to have an area of outstanding natural beauty right on our doorstep, so you don’t have to look too far for inspiration.

We have created a new Recreational Routes section on the website where we will share some of our favourite rides. We have split this into Easy, Intermediate and Challenging sections to cater for all abilities.

We hope to add to the number of rides over the coming months. If you would like to share your favourite rides then please contact us.

Give us your ideas for new cycle routes

West Berkshire Council have asked Spokes for ideas for new cycle routes and facilities in the local area, so they can start working up schemes in advance of any funding becoming available from central government.

We are hopeful that funding for cycling schemes may be significantly increased following publication of the Get Britain Cycling report and it would be good to have schemes already prepared that we can pull off the shelf, so we can make the most of any funding opportunity.
