Spokes Needs Your Help

Spokes is inviting all of its members to come and join us for this year’s AGM, which will take place at 12:30 on Sunday 21 June, at the outdoor seating area at the rear of The Hatchet in Market Place, Newbury.

It’s been a fantastic year for Spokes, with notable successes including:

  • Monthly pub meets at venues across West Berkshire
  • A successful programme of social bike rides
  • Cytech home mechanic training for our Dr Bike volunteers
  • A well-attended bike maintenance workshop at Ace Space
  • Bikeability training for adults and children
  • Provision of loan bikes to local kids from low income families
  • A screening of ‘Bicycle: The Film’ at The Corn Exchange
  • Representation on the Cycle Forum and Cycle Working Group
  • Undertaking the annual cycle counts

We have a really good core of active members who are keen to get involved on a wide range of tasks. However, with additional projects on the horizon, such as the potential opening up of sections of the disused Newbury to Didcot railway line, we desperately need more people to step up and get involved.

Every year at the AGM, we invite our members to nominate themselves to get involved in the Spokes committee. If you can spare just a couple of hours a month, then we would love to hear from you – no experience necessary.

If you would like to find out more, then please email Graham Hunt at secretary@westberkshirespokes.org.

West Berkshire Spokes AGM 2014

West Berkshire Spokes would like to invite our members to attend our AGM, which will take place at 2:30 pm on 22 June at the kiosk in Victoria Park, Newbury. Click on the following links to download copies of last year’s AGM Minutes, this year’s AGM Agenda and a copy of the Spokes Constitution.

We will receive reports from the current committee members and elect people to the various posts for the coming year. The current committee looks like this:

  • Chair – William Pitt
  • Vice-Chair – Vacant
  • Secretary / Membership Secretary – Graham Hunt
  • Treasurer – Alan Lane
  • Publicity Officer – Caroline Lane
  • Web site Editor – Gordon Oliver
  • Highways Officer – Vacant
  • Cycle Count Co-Ordinator – William Pitt
  • Event / Stall Manager – William Pitt
  • General Campaigners – Ed Cooper
  • Training officer – Caroline Lane

Any member can stand for election to any of the above committee posts. We would love for more people to get involved – it’s a lot of fun and you will get the chance to be involved in some really interesting projects.

If you would like to put your name forward or find out more about any of the above positions, then please get in touch before the AGM.

AGM – Revised Plans

The Great British weather looks like it will do its best to spoil our AGM on Sunday. To avoid any potential confusion and disappointment, we are taking the decision to cancel the bike ride and picnic.

The venue for the AGM will be The Hatchet Inn, 12 Market Place, Newbury, RG14 5BD. We are gathering for lunch at 12pm to beat the Fathers’ Day rush and hope to have our AGM at 1pm. If anyone would like to join us then they will be most welcome.

Help us put more bums on saddles

Next Sunday, Spokes will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) where our members will elect people to the various committee posts and decide what our priorities should be for the coming year. Committee posts include:

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Web Editor
  • Publicity Officer
  • Training Officer
  • Cycle Count Organiser
  • Events Organiser
  • Highways Officer
  • General Campaigners

Any member of Spokes can stand for election to the committee. None of the jobs are particularly onerous – just a couple of hours per month is typical. In most cases you don’t need any previous experience, since there are plenty of old hands around to offer advice and support and we always try to have fun whatever we do.

If you would like to find out more about any of the committee positions, then please feel free to contact us or just come along on the day. We would love to hear from you and hope that you will want to help us achieve our aim of putting more bums on saddles!
