Recreational Routes
People often ask us for ideas about where to go for recreational cycle rides. We are lucky enough to have an area of outstanding natural beauty right on our doorstep, so you don’t have to look too far for inspiration.
We have created a new Recreational Routes section on the website where we will share some of our favourite rides. We have split this into Easy, Intermediate and Challenging sections to cater for all abilities.
We hope to add to the number of rides over the coming months. If you would like to share your favourite rides then please contact us.
Dr Bike
West Berkshire Spokes will hold their third Dr Bike session of the year at Newbury Farmers Market on 7th July between 9am and 1pm, where we will be offering free bike checks and carrying out minor maintenance free of charge.
Most people accept that their car needs an annual service and MOT, but unfortunately, many don’t lavish the same love and affection on their bikes. Just like your car, you bike needs regular maintenance to ensure that is safe and running smoothly.
Spokes has a number of volunteers who are trained in basic bike maintenance. We can check your bike for faults and carry out basic repairs like replacing brake blocks and cables and adjusting gears – all for FREE!
If your bike needs a bit more work, then we will happily tell you what needs doing and point you in the direction of a local bike shop that offers Spokes members 10% discount on parts.
AGM – Revised Plans
The Great British weather looks like it will do its best to spoil our AGM on Sunday. To avoid any potential confusion and disappointment, we are taking the decision to cancel the bike ride and picnic.
The venue for the AGM will be The Hatchet Inn, 12 Market Place, Newbury, RG14 5BD. We are gathering for lunch at 12pm to beat the Fathers’ Day rush and hope to have our AGM at 1pm. If anyone would like to join us then they will be most welcome.
Help us put more bums on saddles
Next Sunday, Spokes will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) where our members will elect people to the various committee posts and decide what our priorities should be for the coming year. Committee posts include:
- Chair
- Vice Chair
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Web Editor
- Publicity Officer
- Training Officer
- Cycle Count Organiser
- Events Organiser
- Highways Officer
- General Campaigners
Any member of Spokes can stand for election to the committee. None of the jobs are particularly onerous – just a couple of hours per month is typical. In most cases you don’t need any previous experience, since there are plenty of old hands around to offer advice and support and we always try to have fun whatever we do.
If you would like to find out more about any of the committee positions, then please feel free to contact us or just come along on the day. We would love to hear from you and hope that you will want to help us achieve our aim of putting more bums on saddles!
