I’m writing this all in one go at the end of the week, not the usual way you do a blog I know. I approached bike week with the intention to use my bike as much as possible for work and leisure. I bike whenever I can anyway but not in bad weather!

On Sunday the normal drive to church became a bike ride, much quicker than I thought it would be. Must do that more regularly.

Our Sunday walk which sometimes involves a short drive became a bike ride. We had a lovely ride along country lanes to the West Woodhay Garden Show. Just enough room in the saddlebags for the plants we bought.

Back to work on Monday, at Eastfield House Surgery. It’s raining so out with the waterproofs! I’d normally pick up the car keys. On a good day I often wish my trip to work was a bit longer! My little burst on the bike helps to wake me up! Tony’s fixed a metal rack to the back of my bike to carry my scales and the other equipment I may need. Many of my visits are in the town centre where using my bike saves time and means fewer parking problems.

I can actually say that I enjoy my cycling around the town. I’ve never heard anyone say they enjoy driving around the town! I see many of the families that I know as I cycle around and can stop and say hello. I can literally smell the flowers. If I have a meeting at West Berkshire Hospital or Shaw House instead of slow progress on a traffic clogged road I have a pleasant ride along the canal or through Victoria Park and Shaw Park.

On Tuesday I’m up earlier than normal to do my bit for West Berkshire Council’s official cycle count.

This week I have several meetings in Avonbank House in West St. How much easier it is to cycle between Eastfield House and Avonbank than to drive there on the A339!

Next week I and my colleagues have to move our office base to Northcroft House also in West St. They’re seriously thinking of bringing bikes in for those frequent journeys between office and surgery and some town centre visits.

On Wednesday I receive a call from a student nurse who’ll be joining me for a few weeks in July . He tells me he’ll be driving from Reading. I suggest he catch the train and bring his bike with him!
On Thursday my bike lets me down. I come out of a busy clinic ready to dash off for an important meeting about one of my clients only to find my bike has a serious puncture, the back tyre is completely flat. I’d said that I would be a bit late, now I’m going to be seriously late. The quickest option is to abandon the bike and dash home for the car.

On Friday, puncture mended I’m back on the bike. In the evening I have to cycle to Speen. A lovely ride across Goldwell Park and down Speen Lane and I don’t think I would have been any quicker in the car!
